For
over 30 years The Blue Ridge Pickin' Parlor has provided students with the
finest in music instruction. Our instructors all have experience as studio
musicians and as band members. However, those facts don't necessarily make a good
teacher. A good music instructor is someone who can take their extensive
knowledge and convey it to students clearly and in ways that are easy to
understand. They must also be patient and non-intimidating people who are able
to keep their students inspired and excited about music.
We are very proud to say that each
one of our instructors possesses all these qualities. We may sound like we're
bragging, but it's true!

BLUEGRASS JAM SCHOOL
BANJO...MANDOLIN...GUITAR...BASS...FIDDLE
Come join us for a WEEKLY SLOW SPEED JAM
Imagine getting to play your old favorites and learn NEW SONGS at a moderated slow speed jam every week. Tabs will be provided for each instrument and the parts will be demonstrated. More than simply a jam, you will be taught jam etiquette and how to REALLY play with others. Ask all the questions you want. Learn about the history, musical structure and more subtle aspects of Bluegrass through listening sessions. Nothing will improve your playing more than regular jamming in a structured social setting, with others of your own ability.
JAM SCHOOL will be held on a permanent and continuous weekly basis, so students can attend whenever they have the time. Led by an experienced jammer and instructor, you will soon be ready to join the pickers at the next festival.

“Beginning Bluegrass Banjo I” 1 Hour Class 13 Years Old and Up
Learn how to tune, wear the picks and read tablature notation. Learn solos to popular bluegrass, old-time and folk songs and how to accompany them. This class is for the very beginner.

“Beginning Old Time Banjo I” 1 Hour Class 13 Years Old and Up
In this class you will learn the basics of clawhammer and old-time banjo in a fun and friendly environment. Using classic folk songs, you will learn double-thumb and clawhammer styles for both melody and backup. Have all your banjo questions answered, and learn to play with others in a group jam. This group is perfect for beginning players or bluegrassers that want to get their feet wet in old time banjo.

“Beginning Harmonica I” 1 Hour Class 13 Years Old and Up
You’ll continue to sound like a pro, bending notes, and playing shakes, whahs, and wails. You’ll dig learning essential techniques such as tongue blocking, lipping and chording, and how to apply these skills to different genres: Blues, Country, Rock, or Folk. You’ll have fun discovering the wide range this li’l ax has to offer, from the sweet and sublime to the down and dirty. Bring a “C” diatonic harmonica.

“Beginning Irish Dance” 11/2 Hour Class 13 Years old and Up
Does the beat of Irish music make you want to get up and dance? Here’s a chance to try it out. This class is designed for beginners, ages 13 and up, to learn the basic building blocks of Irish dance. These skills will be applied to solo (step) dance, figures dance and ceili (social) dance. All classes are beginner friendly and safety conscious.

“Beginning Children's Guitar I” 1 Hour Class 7-13 Years
This class is for children 7 and up and is a fun and relaxed introduction to playing the guitar. Perfect for Kindermusik students continuing their musical education. Using easy techniques, perfect for small hands, each student will learn two well known simple folk songs and will begin to explore melody and harmony. This course consists of 8 one hour sessions.

“Beginning Children's Dulcimer I” 1 Hour Class 7-13 Years
This class is for children with an elementary level of music education. Using the mountain dulcimer, a basic three stringed instrument, each student will learn to play two well-known folk songs. We will explore melody and rhythm in a relaxed and fun filled atmosphere. Perfect for the continuing Kindermusik student. 8 one hour sessions.
